After flunking out of Illinois twice, I spent five years mining coal near my hometown. I married Cindy Collins (the other one) in 1980; her uncles shortly thereafter convinced me to complete my undergrad, so for the last three years of my mining career, I spent nights operating heavy equipment and days attending SIU. I did well enough to get into and then graduate from Harvard Law School. My oldest daughter was born in 1984 during my second year of law school. After graduation, I was an associate at two national law firms with offices in St. Louis. Our second daughter was born in 1988. In 1995, I went in house at McDonnell Douglas in St. Louis, and after Boeing bought MDC, I moved to corporate office in Seattle in 2000. Corporate promptly left for Chicago, leaving me behind, so I returned to Boeing in St. Louis in 2003. Boeing laid me off in 2017, and since both daughters chose to live near Seattle, we moved there in 2019. Cindy and I spend our days enjoying retired life and spending time with our daughters and grandchildren.

Ever since accepting my invitation to attend the University of Illinois, I’ve felt the community was a new home for me. Alpha Beta made that feeling a reality. I’ve been living in the university community since 2001. My wife and I just recently moved to Urbana and have welcomed a daughter. We are spitting distance from PAR and live in a home I once thought was only for professors. Luckily, my wife teaches for the School of Social Work. I attended the university already as a private pilot, and I earned the rest of my ratings and graduated as a “professional pilot.” I was fortunate to be hired by a local company with flight operations that span the globe. I’ve flown to all 50 states and have visited six of the seven continents, with plans to visit Australia soon. My time with Alpha Beta was meaningful, and I still have close relationships with many of the brothers from my era. I’ve also been the alumni advisor for many years, and I have been able to meet and work with several other brothers who are new to alumni status. No matter the generation, there are many of us who are hard workers and value Alpha Beta.
